National Eye Institute (NEI).
  • Eye Disease Information for Patients. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with an eye disease, they provide brochures that will provide information on symptoms, treatment, prognosis, and research.

National Cancer Institute.
  • The National Cancer Institute (NCI) coordinates the government's cancer research program. NCI is the largest of the 17 biomedical research institutes and centers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). You may want to check out these two links found on their site.
    • Public: Information on cancer topics for the general public, for health educators and communicators, and for students and teachers.
    • Patients: This site is designed specifically for people with cancer and the people who care about them. It is a place to come back to continuously throughout diagnosis, treatment, and coping. They have much more information on their site as well. This is a great place to begin you research.

National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI)

National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR)
  • The National Institute of Nursing Research supports clinical and basic research to establish a scientific basis for the care of individuals across the life span--from management of patients during illness and recovery to the reduction of risks for disease and disability and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. According to its broad mandate, the Institute seeks to understand and ease the symptoms of acute and chronic illness, to prevent or delay the onset of disease or disability or slow its progression, to find effective approaches to achieving and sustaining good health, and to improve the clinical settings in which care is provided. The NINR's research extends to problems encountered by patients, families, and caregivers. It also emphasizes the special needs of at-risk and underserved populations. National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD)
  • At the NIDCD, biomedical and behavioral research and research training is conducted and supported in the normal and disordered processes of hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech and language that affect 46 million Americans. Disorders of hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech and language affect more than one in ten Americans. To broaden the dissemination of information about disorders of human communication, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) established the NIDCD Information Clearinghouse in 1991 which you can find on their site. The Clearinghouse develops health-related materials such as directories, information packets, fact sheets, and pamphlets about deafness and communication disorders.
